PTY IN-SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Magic Words of Poetry (Grades
K − 5)
Children
fall in love with words when they act poems out loud in the Magic Words
of Poetry.
Using a combination of creative drama techniques that include pantomime,
choral speaking, and improvisation, kids work as a team to prepare a poem for
performance. Along the way, kids get to know poetry through the timeless works
of Eve Merriam, Langston Hughes, and Shel Silverstein.
Citizen Ship (Grades K – 3)
Ahoy,
Young Citizens! Early Childhood students hop on-board the Citizen
Ship and embark on mythical adventures to discover important character
education concepts such as cooperation, kindness, and good manners. Acting as crew members on the “Citizen-Ship,” students engage in role-plays and puppet activities that give them practice with the skills they need to be good school citizens.
Citizens’ Adventure Network (Grades 3 – 5)
Breaking Story: Young Citizen Makes Positive Choice for Peace! In the Citizens’
Adventure Network (CAN), upper elementary students become inquiring
reporters who use dramatic enactments to develop critical thinking skills, self-assertion,
and cooperation skills. In these imaginative character education workshops, students learn that they CAN make a difference!
Strategic Choice (Grades 6 – 12)
Teenagers use the Strategic Choice program to set short and long term goals, and gain the social strategies they need to accomplish their objectives. Headlines: Off the Page (Grades 5 – 12)
Justice versus injustice? Headlines: Off the Page explores these terms through journalism
and media studies. Students gain experience in playwriting, acting, and journalism, while developing a respect and appreciation for other’s perspectives and opinions. The residency culminates with a presentation of student-devised material created by the class.
Carnival! (Grades K – 3)
Children discover the wonder and excitement of Caribbean
culture through storytelling, music, dance, and costume workshops that culminate in a Carnival celebration of their own making. Drawing upon West Indian customs, art forms, language, and stories, each class in the program creates its own version of a Carnival
Band. By exploring another culture with imagination and empathy, children are better able to find the common thread in all cultures.
Write In / Right On! (Grades 5 − 12)
Teenagers tell it like it is in Write In / Right On! In this spoken word program, students use imagery and metaphor to express their deepest feelings and most cutting edge ideas.
